About Bobby Russell

This is Bobby Russell’s unique story of a great football career that almost never happened!

Bobby Russell had the world at his feet as a rising star with Glasgow’s famous youth team, Possil YM —the same club that gave Kenny Dalglish his start in the game.

A move to Sunderland didn’t go to plan, and for a time Bobby questioned whether he wanted to continue in football at all. But with the help of Possil’s legendary coach, Bobby Dinnie, he got his life and career back on track.

What happened next would be more believable if it had come out of the pages of Roy of the Rovers!

Within two years of being told he wasn’t big enough or good enough, Bobby fought his way back. He played for a Glasgow pub team, then at Juvenile level, before joining Shettleston Juniors. In just one season there, he helped the team achieve League and Cup success.

During that time, he was spotted by his boyhood club, Rangers, and provisionally signed while still playing for Shettleston.

The following season, he went straight into the Rangers first team —and played a key role in winning the domestic treble: League, League Cup and Scottish Cup.

Bobby went on to enjoy a long and successful career with Rangers and Motherwell. As you’ll discover in his book, he was known not just for his ability, but as one of the game’s genuine good guys.

This is a story of resilience, setbacks, and making it to the top against the odds.

Could it happen today? Of course not. It was remarkable it happened back then! This is Bobby Russell’s unique story of a great football career that almost never happened!
